Step 1: Have an adult light the candles on your birthday cake. (This step assumes you have a birthday cake, candles, and an adult with a lighter or matches.)

Step 2: Blow out the candles on your birthday cake. It is recommended that you make a wish at this time. (This step does not require an adult, however, it should be noted that even though the adult just spent 20 minutes searching through drawers and cabinets looking for a lighter or a match, they will not be angry with you for blowing out the candles they just lit.)

Step 3: Consume sugary birthday goodness. (This step also does not require an adult, however, you may save yourself some cleanup time if you have an adult help get the cake and ice cream onto your plate.)

Step 4: Open gifts. (No adult needed; after all, you’re four years old now.)

Step 5: Have an adult help you with the “difficult” gifts. (Even when you’re four, you still need an adult for those packages that just won’t give up their contents.)

Step 6: Change your shirt, go outside, and burn off that birthday energy while playing with your new toys. Being barefoot and having good hair insures maximum birthday playtime enjoyment. (Adult participation is optional in this step.)
